There are quite a few highly effective home remedies for killing fleas, which are non toxic and safe to use.
Flea infestations usually occur in households with pets. Fleas are part of the life of animals with fur. But a healthy cat will tend to have just a few fleas which won't bother anyone.
It's the infestations that become a problem.
The following is a list of some very good home remedies:
the homeopathic remedy Ruta grav 6c added to the drinking water
add one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to one pint of the drinking water
add brewers yeast to the diet or brush it into the fur
add about one third of chopped fresh garlic to the food every day
sprinkle the herbs pennyroyal, tansy and fleabane around carpets and the cat's bedding (PLEASE NOTE - pennyroyal can abort foetus, so don't use if anyone is pregnant)
any one of the aromatherapy oils cedarwood, eucalyptus, terebinth, lemon, rosemary, lavender and mint can be added to water and massaged into the skin
All the above can prove very effective home remedies for killing fleas, but be careful what you brush into your cat's fur. It must always be edible, as cats are fastidious groomers. Be particularly careful with the aromatherapy oils.
But, by far the best way of dealing with fleas is in preventing an infestation altogether.
You can only do this if you find out the cause.
The body pH of your cat will determine whether fleas are attracted and remain or are repelled.
Body pH is determined by the diet you feed your cat. Cat's fed a natural, raw, high quality, meat and bones diet will have an acidic pH. This is unattractive to fleas and they won't naturally harbour in your pet's fur.
Cats fed processed or commercial cat food, which is cooked, nutrient poor, low grade and full of various chemicals, will make the pH of your cat heaven in a box for fleas.
So instead of focussing on home remedies for killing fleas, why not instead focus in the diet of your cat to prevent flea infestation altogether. You win. You cat wins. How much better can it get?
